Redford resigned himself to having to deal with Jed getting sunburned and complaining about it later. He’d heard aloe vera was really good for spreading on burned skin, so he supposed he’d pick some ofthat up. Either that or hear Jed moan and groan every time his shirt touched his neck. Although perhaps he’d walk around naked. That might be a verygood compromise.

Their trip to the pyramids took just over an hour. Redford wished he’d brought along a camera to capture the flock of ibis they saw, the grazing animals, the gentle waves of the dunes that emerged once they got farther away fromthe city. The pyramids seemed to grow as they’d approached, rising from the sand like relics ofancient time.

“The Giza Pyramids,” their guide said, clearly enjoying their looks of awe. Even Jed looked stunned, his mouth dropped open slightly as he took in the sight. “The three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Mankaure.

And to their left, the Sphinx.”

“They’re amazing,”Redford murmured.

“The Stinks dude has no nose,”Jed said. His head

was tilted to the side, eyes squinted as he studied it. The lack of a nose seemed to bother him greatly. “He’s seriouslyputtingout anMJ post-surgeryvibe.”

“The nose was destroyed by invading Turks, we think,” the guide replied. Where there had been a previouslysunnygrin, his expressionsoured. Turninghis head, he spat with fervor; apparently that was all that needed to be said about his opinions onthe matter.

“It’s a shame,” Redford agreed. The Sphinx was still nonetheless impressive, even noseless and apparently channeling the surgery advice of dearly departed pop stars. Redford liked that his nose was missing. It was like the Sphinx had battle scars but was stillstanding proud and talland would continue to do so more for many more thousands of years. Redford reached a hand up and absently touched his thumb to one of the scars on his own face, rubbing along the edge onhis cheek.

“Can we go climb on this shit, or what?” Jed, not surprisingly, wasn’t as interested in the history lessons as he was wanting the chance to run around. Bouncing a little on the back of the camel, Jed shot their guide a sunnygrin. “It’s not like we’re goingto break it, right?”

“No, you cannot go ‘climb on that shit’,” the guide said witheringly. “You may go inside the pyramids, however.”

“Sweet!” Clambering down from the camel, Jed held out his hand for Redford. “Treasure hunters, ahoy!” Sitting for more than twenty minutes, for Jed, sometimes seemed like torture. Redford had learned that any extended period of time was dealt with by sleeping or getting increasingly jittery. Now, able to stretch his legs, Jed laced his fingers with Redford’s as they headed through the warmsand toward the nearest pyramid. The guide sat withsome others who had made the same trip, watching their respective groups explore the area, the camels lazilysunningthemselves.

There was a gaggle of tourists gathered just outside the pyramid. Redford’s gaze went past themto the small entrance, barely big enough to allow one person through. When he looked up, the pyramid appeared colossalin size.
